Finding a new home for your seedling 🔍

Like we talked about in the last chapter, your seedling needs to find a bigger home 🏡 so its root system can grow and expand! In this chapter 📗, we will learn about the different options for where you can continue to grow your seedlings! 💓

Option 1: In Planting Pots

If you don’t have space for a raised bed or an in-ground garden, this is a great option!

Finding a container

You can get creative with the type of pot you use for your plants! They don’t have to be big and fancy 🪴, but any container big enough to hold the plant and that has drainage holes for the water to escape will work! 💧

• If you want to move your vegetable 🥒 garden around, a lightweight container will be best! Once your plants are planted, they get very heavy, especially after watering 🚿.
• Dark pots also absorb heat 🔥, so you might want to think about color of your pot! We don’t want the soil to get too warm, especially in hot areas 🔆
• Avoid pots made of treated (painted) wood 🪵, they can contain harmful chemicals 🧪 that could be absorbed by your plants!

Other considerations

• Size! Most plants can fit well into containers that are at least 10 in wide and 12 in deep. And feel free to think beyond the typical round flower pot. Half barrels, plastic-lined bushel baskets, and window boxes can work just as well. 🍃
• Tall plants! Plants that grow tall or produce vines (like tomatoes 🍅 and cucumbers 🥒) will be more productive if they're grown with a support in the container. Something as simple as a wire cage or some kind of trellis (even a simple stick of bamboo) into the container at planting time will work. 🧑‍🌾

Option 2: Raised Beds

If you have the space for a raised garden outside of your home or already have a raised bed at your home, this is a great option!

There are two types of raised beds:

1. Elevated raised beds
2. On-ground raised beds

A raised bed is just an open box of soil that is contained above the ground. Raised beds provide you control over the health ❤️‍🩹 of the soil where you are growing your plants. The goal is to create a deep, wide growing area that encourages plant roots to grow down and outward🌱.
